Akshay Kumar might be ruling Bollywood today along with the Khans and Hrithik Roshan, but he had to come a long way to prove himself. Rajiv Hari-Om Bhatia aka Akshay Kumar started out as a chef in Bangkok, where someone sugested him to take up modelling because of his good looks. Soon offers started pouring in and the martial arts trained actor shocked and surprised everyone by doing his own death defying stunts. He was popular for his Khiladi series and after dating a string of his co-stars including the diva Rekha, and Raveena Tandon, he married his co-star Twinkle Khanna in 2001, wih whom he has a son Araav. Akshay proved himself in action roles, then went on to play intense characters in movies like Jaanwar, Dhadkan and Sangharsh, before establishing himself as a comic actor in Hera Pheri, Garam Masala etc. Last year he gave four successive hits with Namaste London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiya and Welcome. Bored of comedy roles, he is going back to action genre with his forthcoming projects Singh Is King and Chandni Chowk To China!

Saroj Khan, while making her millions of fans dance across the world through her now famous show ‘Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan‘ on NDTV Imagine, tells interesting tales about the stars (yet another reason to watch her show).
Saroj Khan recounted how Aishwarya Rai, while shooting for the Filmfare Best Choreography Award winning song ‘Barso re megha‘ from Guru (2007), had met with an accident. While filming a scene, Ash was supposed to cycle her way through a bridge, during heavy rains and wind storms, and a gushing stream beneath. Her skirt got entangled in the rear wheel, and she fortunately fell on the bridge, otherwise she could just have been washed away! Aishwarya had suffered bruises on her hand, and Saroj Khan recounted how she gave a perfect shot after getting first-aid, while also mentioning that, had there been any other actress, she would have announced pack-up, but not Ash!
The scene where Aishwarya is seen diving into the pond, was completed only when Saroj Khan made her swim the entire length of the pond. Saroj Khan also praised her for dancing atop a large rock, amidst the thunderstorm. She told that Mani Ratnam got apprehensive about shooting that particular scene as the height was way too much risky, made far more dangerous with the blowing wind and heavy rain. But when Aishwarya learnt that her director was forcibly keeping himself from a beautiful sequence, she stubbornly climbed atop with the help of a crane and gave a beautiful shot yet again, while the whole crew was biting nails with tension, almost waiting for her to slip and fall off! Aishwarya Rai has been Saroj Khan’s favourite dancer, since working with her in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).

Her ‘comeback’ film after five years, Aaja Nachle might have met with a lukewarm response, but Madhuri Dixit proved that it is just a matter of time and people will line up again to watch her on the big screen. Madhuri, who had the most clean image of all during her reign over the Indian Film Industry in the 90s, got married to Dr. Sriram Nene, a US based doctor (it was an arranged marriage, to everyone’s surprise), and was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, in 2002. Sanjay is one of her biggest fans and during the shooting of Devdas, Madhuri Dixit was pregnant! But she carried off everything from wearing a 30-kg ghagra and dancing, to gyrating to the beats of ‘Dola re‘ with elan. Truly, she is one of the most charming actresses that Bollywood has ever seen and her countless fans are awaiting her big bang return like anything.

Everyone knows about the rivalry between Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai. When the Miss India 1994 contestants’ selections were being held all over the country, Aishwarya Rai had become a known face by then and as many as 25 contestants withdrew their names from participation, citing Ash as the clear winner, to be their reason for withdrawal. Sushmita too did that but was reprimanded by her mother for doing so, who told her that if she were to do the same thing as the others, how could she be proud of her? This is when Sushmita went back into the contest, where the two fought it out amidst immense speculation, where Aishwarya was the favorite baby of all, while Sushmita was the tough contender. The final five were put to question, and even then there was a tie between Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai, something which had never happened in the history of the contest. After the tie-breaker, Aishwarya lost the first position to Sushmita by a meagre 0.3 points, and both the ladies went on to win the crowns in their respective international pageants.

Shreya Ghoshal was chosen as the voice of Aishwarya Rai’s character Parvati aka Paro, in the movie Devdas, by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. When Bhansali first heard her on television, she was taking part in a music contest and it is said that the ace director was in the bathroom at that time. He didn’t have to listen to her much before taking the decision. Shreya’s voice immediately became a sensation, and she was bombarded with offers galore. Her versatility was proved in the very year 2002 itself, when apart from delivering superhits from the classically bent Devdas album, she also gave the Indian Film Industry, one of it’s most sensual songs, ‘Jaadu hai nasha hai’ from the movie Jism. The rest, as they say, is history!

Nitin Chandrakant Desai is one of the most popular art directors of Indian Film Industry today. Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Lagaan are some of his most popular works, barring the first of which got him a National Award each. He has four National Awards and four Fiilmfare Awards as well, and he continues to excell in taking the audiences to a visual tour of altogether different worlds. In fact, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was so impressed with his work on the sets of his movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that after finishing the whole movie, he didn’t let the sets to be destroyed, and rather chose to stay there for a complete month itself! Needless to say, Nitin’s work on Bhansali’s Devdas and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan haunts the audiences till date and makes them wish, if only they could be there too…

Nirmala Sadhu Khan, aka Saroj Khan, the dance master of the Indian Film Industry, is a known name today. But what isn’t known is her painful history. Her family was forced to leave Pakistan post partition. Her father changed her very name to shield her from their orthodox relatives. She was forced to work as a child; child artiste, group dancer, assistant dance master and finally dance master. Married off to a 43 year old father of 4, when she was just 13, Saroj Khan gave birth to her first child Raju Khan at age 14 in 1963. In 1965, she gave birth to a daughter who died within eight months of marriage. But Saroj Khan had to report to work the very next day. Her first husband refused to give his name to her children (she had a second daughter with him). She got her first break in 1974, but got recognition only in 1983. She thanks her second husband immensely, and lives with his first wife without any problem. There is much beyond the name Saroj Khan, which one might not know, but after dancing to life’s tunes for quite a while, she turned the tide around, and now makes the whole world dance. We are sure, even you must be saying to her now “Masterji!, Naachte rahiye, aur nachaate rahiye… (Keep dancing and keep making us dance too.)”

During her appearance on Nach Baliye’s third season, Om Shanti Om director Farah Khan was accompanied by Deepika Padukone. She revealed a hilarious incident which took place on the sets of OSO. During the shooting of an intimate scene between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, Deepika whispered to SRK, “You know what! I was just 8 years old when I watched Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, and I was just 12 when I watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai!”. To this King Khan got slightly annoyed and said to Farah Khan, “Abe! Kahaan se le aayi is child labour ko? (From where have you selected this child labour as the lead actress)”. Deepika was trying to distract Shah Rukh Khan, by referring to his blockbuster hits from the 90s. Om Shanti Om itself proved to be the biggest hit of last year, despite critical mocking, and did business worth over 96 crore.

Vidya Malvade, who played the hockey team captain in last year’s blockbuster Chak De! India, had to overcome a lot of struggle in her own life, before she shot to fame with the Shimit Amin directed movie. A former model, and a student of Law, her initial foray into media met with a lot of disappointments and her husband, a pilot, Capt. Bagga met with an accident a few years back and left this world. But by continuing to search for something better, her role in Chak De! India came her way, and she proved that given the right production house, co-star and the role, she can make a mark too. Not afraid to speak her mind, Vidya recently said that she thinks KPS Gill was to be blamed for the hockey debacle which hit the headlines this week. And after having worked with the ‘inspirational’, (as she says) Shah Rukh Khan, she is working on her next project with none other than Sanjay Dutt. We hope to see more of her soon!
