Jodhaa Akbar opens to great response

Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar has opened to great response across the nation, barring Rajasthan, where the protest by the Raput community has forced the distributors from releasing the film. The movie has got good response majorly, and has been criticised on only one account: it’s length. The movie has two intervals and is three hours and twenty minutes long. Many viewers expressed interest for a second screening as well, despite it being a long and simple love story.

Jodhaa Akbar, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai amongst others, opened amidst widespread excitement for various reasons, including the return of Hrithik Roshan to the big screen after a gap of more than thirteen months, and the re-pairing of Aishwarya Rai with Hrithik Roshan after Dhoom:2. Hrithik Roshan has stated time and again that Aishwarya Rai is his favourite co-star.

To add to the charms of the movie, it has music by A R Rahman, and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The team of A R Rahman, Javed Akhtar and Ashutosh Gowariker came together for the third time with Jodhaa Akbar, after having worked on Read more

Movie review – Jodhaa Akbar

Tadka spice – It could just have been another movie review, but for once we won’t concentrate on the storyline, as Jodhaa Akbar goes beyond, much beyond. We give you to the point answer to the question: why should one watch Jodhaa Akbar?

Watch it for Hrithik Roshan. The ace of aces, returns to the screen post Dhoom:2, in an avatar so capturing which affirms once again the fact that if there is anyone who can ever pose a challenge to Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan, it’s him. As Akbar, the great emperor, he is perfection personified. Be it the anger in his eyes on being betrayed, or his flirtatious voice urging his love to follow him. Be it the ruler who goes amidst his public to understand their woes, or the thinker who treats each religion with respect. Be it the fighter who believes in trying everything before he resorts to bloodshed, or the merciless punisher with a heart torn apart. Just one verdict rules: as Akbar, and as the perfect actor, Hrithik rules. Period.

Watch it for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Little would one have guessed, that when she played the ambassador of India on foreign shores a couple of years back, she would go on the play the role of Mallika-e-Hindustaan Jodhaa, the fiery warrior princess with such e`lan. If there is anyone who can put to shame other actresses for playing bimbettes and basking in the glory of hits which have little to do with their roles, it’s Aishwarya. As Jodhaa. the intelligent, go getter, sword-wielding and clear headed princess, she gives Hrithik Read more

Mithya rocks the screens nationwide!

With all the praises that Rajat Kapoor’s Mithya had been recieving at all the film festivals for so long, his dream project which was almost 10 years in the making has struck the right chord with audiences, all over India. The movie has opened to thunderous praises all over the nation, and is on it’s way to prove another Bheja Fry for the trio Rajat Kapoor-Vinay Pathak-Ranvir Shorey.

The movie is a satirical tale of a very bad actor, who makes it to tinselville, and gets entangled in the movies-mafia matrix. By the time he becomes aware of the fact that he has a close resemblance to a don, and this is the reason that he has been used by some people, he is More...too deep in a mess to come out of it. So deep, that it becomes difficult to realize what is the truth and what isn’t.

The director, Rajat Kapoor who is popular for making movies in the measley amount of 60 lacs (6 million rupees), has done another fine job once again. More than that, it is Ranvir Shorey once again who steals the show with his antics, ably supported by the multi-talented Vinay Pathak. The trio have become a force to reckon with, having deleivered so many goodies to the Indian Film Industry. For the first time, Neha Dhupia too has managed to impress viewers like never before.

Rajat Kapoor who recently signed a multi-crore contract with a leading production house, has some more releases lined up this year, but for that, you’ll have to keep watching this space. Till then, rush to the theatre nearest to your home, and enjoy a roller-coaster ride running by the name of Mithya.

Movie review – Sunday

Tadka question – So is Sunday a movie worth watching? You bet it is!

Ajay Devgan, Irrfan Khan, Ayesha Takia and Arshad Warsi – a lethal combination, one might say, considering their appeal in the Hindi Film Industry today, and something that the director Rohit Shetty must be able to bank on. And that’s exactly what he seems to have done, in what seems to be a thriller cum comedy, all set to be the first commercial big hit of 2008.

The movie Sunday is good, to say the least, especially in the first half, but it is the second half which does wonders for everyone. As compared to many other movies which have interesting first halves, and decrepit second ones, this is a movie which not only reverses the trend, but also Read more

Movie review – Halla Bol

Tadka question – Is Halla Bol another winner from the stable of Rajkumar Santoshi? You bet it is! Click on ‘Read more’ to view the complete movie review.

Rajkumar Santoshi is back! And this time he has Ajay Devgan, Vidya Balan along with the superbly talented Pankaj Kapoor in the lead. Halla Bol is one movie which comes in the spate of socially relevant flicks that have captured Bollywood in the recent past, like Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai. And even though one may like to beleive that Mr. Santoshi has given in to this ‘trend’, one cannot ignore the fact that long before RDB and LRM, it was Mr. Santoshi himself who made movies like Damini, which we remember very well till date.

Halla Bol is the story of a small town lad Ashfaque (Ajay Devgan), who dreams of making it big in the Hindi Film Industry. In order to inch towards his dream’s realization, he starts honing up his skills under the aegis of Sidhu (Pankaj Kapoor), a reformed dacoit, who uses his street theatre group to deliver socially relevant messages to the masses. Soon Ashfaque becomes a huge star wit the name of Sameer Khan. But soon after that Read more

Movie review – Saawariya.

Tadka spice – Thumbs up! This pretty much sums up the review of the movie. To read what magic has Sanjay Leela Bhansali spun this time around, please click on ‘Read more’.

Masha-Allah! What happens when a director who has given us Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, and most importantly Black, wants to celebrate love and life? The answer is sheer poetry. Saawariya takes you into a world which has beauty dripping from each and every frame of the movie. The director has hit his audience in the secret corners of their heart for this is a movie which celebrates the various aspects of love: madness, jealousy, rage, wait and above all love itself. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali at the helm of affairs, he completely overpowers you with his vision, and this is where the negative reviews of the movie find birth: the movie can only be understood by people who have actually fallen in love. It is not your run of the mill boy-meets-girl-overcome-problems-happy-ending story. It is that fable which will tug you gently at the heart and may even leave you miffed with a few questions for the seemingly bizarre climax.

New in town singer Ranbir is a happy go lucky person who arrives in search of his own destination love. Sakina aka Sonam is a girl who is living in her past and after a chance encounter with Ranbir she is torn between her past and present. A lissome prostitute Gulabji, played by Rani Mukherji watches the ups and downs of their strange love and Iman is played by Salman Khan, in a short role as the man behind it all.

The last time any actor made such an impressive debut was Hrithik Roshan with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, seven years back. Though he is not to be compared with the superstar Roshan, this time you have Ranbir Kapoor carrying a movie on his shoulders like no other newcomer in a long, long time. He is lovable with his Read more

Movie review – Om Shanti Om

Tadka spice – It is a tribute to the 70s’ showmanship, and is very watchable because of Shah Rukh Khan and lots more! Please click on ‘Read more’ to view the complete movie review of Om Shanti Om.

Just sit back and enjoy! No matter how cliche it sounds, it is THE funda to be followed after the curtains draw apart and the credits of Om Shanti Om start rolling. Leave your logics behind because Farah Khan goes all out in an effort to pay the ultimate tribute to the 70s in her second directorial venture.

And as much as you would like to find resons to watch this movie, you can’t help but feel that this is Shah Rukh Khan’s movie all the way. The film has all the ingredients of a masala flick and Farah is flawless in paying her ode to the showmen of 70s, what with the brainless twists, and all the idiosyncrasies associated with that period. So there you have, punarh-janams aka reincarnations, ghosts to haunt you, ‘ganga-jamuna bahaati’ maas and all the cliche words associated with romance in those days. And Deepika Padukone is ravishing to say the least. Watch her in her first scene of the movie and you’ll know that Read more
