Shame on Amrita Rao, shame on Arshad Warsi!

Tadka question – At the 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards. two of our actors refused to do something – What and why?

Year 1999Saroj Khan aka “Materji”is handed the Filmfare Best Choreographer Award by MF Hussain and Naghma (song ‘Nimbooda’, movie – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam)

Year 2002 - Rakesh Ranjan is handed the Filmfare Best Sound Recordist Award by Shyam Benegal and Sharmila Tagore (movie – Aks)

Year 2008Sujata Sharma Virk is given the Filmfare Best Costume Designer Award by Abbas-Mustaan (movie – Gandhi, My Father).

And here’s the sad part. At this year’s 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards, two of our stars simply refused to go on stage to hand over the technical awards. Why? Because they thought that this was beneath them!

Amrita Rao and Arshad Warsi, were requested by the Filmfare team to go on-stage and deliver the Technical Awards, which are also the first set of awards handed out each year, in the oldest and the most sought-after awards night of the Indian Film Industry. But when Amrita Rao was asked to do the honours, she refysed saying, “Send me up for something better na! Please!”.

Stars ka Tadka – Nitin Chandrakant Desai

Tadka trivia

Indian Film Industry is full of movies whose sets have caught on with not just Indian, but global audiences. Nitin Chandrakant Desai is one of the most popular art directors of Indian Film Industry today. Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Lagaan are some of his most popular works, barring the first of which got him a National Award each. He has four National Awards and four Fiilmfare Awards as well, and he continues to excell in taking the audiences to a visual tour of altogether different worlds. In fact, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was so impressed with his work on the sets of his movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that after finishing the whole movie, he didn’t let the sets to be destroyed, and rather chose to stay there for a complete month itself! Needless to say, Nitin’s work on Bhansali’s Devdas and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan haunts the audiences till date and makes them wish, if only they could be there too…

Dharm and Parzania disrespected at Filmfare Awards

Tadka question – For long, parallel cinema wasn’t featured in mainstream award shows like the reputed Filmfare Awards, but why were they nominated this year, only to draw a blank?

‘English, dubbed and foriegn movies are not to be nominated for any of the awards.’ Or so used to read one of the many lines of the Filmfare Awards advertisements, asking the general public to nominate their previous year’s favourite performances. And any viewer, not just a fan of Filmfare, could have easily guessed that hard hitting movies like Dharm and Parzania would not be nominated in any of the categories.

But this year, all that changed. Gems of 2007, from Indian Cinema, Dharm and Parzania were not only nominated in at least two categories, at the 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards, but drew a blank when it came to collect the most-sought after award, the black statuette at the ceremony. This is perhaps the first time that Filmfare has nominated two off-beat multiplex movies in the popular awards categories, and also gone ahead to Read more

Tadka trivia

If there are casting coups which directors try for all the time, then there are certain things which can happen only at Filmfare Awards.

The year was 1999, and at the 44tn Annual Filmfare Awards – 1999, Kajol was the eye of the storm. She had just delivered her nth hit in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and along with Shah Rukh Khan winning the Best Actor award for KKHH, she too was declared the Best Actress. Wearing a light brown ensemble, she was shimmering with her soon to be bridal status, as she was to marry Ajay Devgan a few days later. And it was a moment which everyone saw with bated breath, as Shah Rukh Khan hugged Kajol, virtually for the last time, as speculation of the SRK-Devgan feud was at an all time high. Needless to say, the picture was at the front page of each national daily, the following morning.

But if there are sights which enthrall you for years to come, then there are other things which can make it not so rocking. Last year, when the Filmfare Awards guest list was trimmed heavily pertaining to the number of seats in Yash Raj Studios, sisters Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor were forced to sit behind, guess who… Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, as these were the only two seats that were vacant by the time the Kapoor sisters came to find some. Karisma was once the fiance of Abhishek, and the relations went sour after the break off during engagement, with Kareena Kapoor rumoured to have been badmouthing Jaya Bachchan to one and all, and blaming her for her sister’s broken alliance. Abhishek and Aishwarya married a few days later!
