YRF’s poor show doesn’t matter to Kunal Kohli

Tadka spice - With movies from Yash Raj Films’ stable turning to no shows at the Box Office, Kunal Kohli’s Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic will be under intense pressure to perform.

Out of five releases in 2007, Yash Raj Films had just one massive hit in Shimit Amin’s Chak De! India, and four flops, namely Ta Ra Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and Aaja Nachle. And with this year’s Tashan going down the drain, the clouds of ill luck seem to be hovering above Yash Raj Films. But all this doesn’t seem to bother the director of the next YRF movie, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’s director Kunal Kohli.

The movie Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is the story of a rich man played by Saif Ali Khan, who due to some circumstances is handed over the responsibility of taking care of four orphaned kids. The trouble is, both sides can’t stand each other. The kids prayers are answered in Rani Mukherji, who appears as this lovely angel of God, sent by He Himself, played by Rishi Kapoor. The story moves on to tell the bonding and the situations that they face.

It was Kunal Kohli’s previous movie Fanaa, which remains one of the stellar performers of YRF banner, even though it Read more

Coming up - Subhash Ghai’s Yuvraj!

Tadka spice - Move over Black And White! The showman, Subhash Ghai is coming back, with his next fully commercial venture, Yuvraj.

Subhash Ghai has managed to get himself back in notice with Black And White, but Mukta Arts Ltd’s next venture Yuvraj, will see the showman of the Indian Film Industry, return to romance genre, in an out-and-out commercial venture. Subhash Ghai’s next release Yuvraj, stars Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif, and Subhash Ghai IS the director again.

What has been touted as a musical, much like Subhash Ghai’s 1999 blockbuster Taal, Yuvraj’s prospective dates haven’t been announced but some exclusive production shots were released in India’s leading film magazine Filmfare, a few issues back and since then it has gained the initial hype. It has been reported that Salman Khan plays a chorus singer, and Anil Kapoor plays a musical genius in the movie, with Katrina Kaif paired opposite Salman Khan. The pairing itself has increased interest in the movie to a great extent.

Stars ka tadka - Aishwarya Rai and Saroj Khan

Tadka trivia

Saroj Khan, while making her millions of fans dance across the world through her now famous show ‘Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan‘ on NDTV Imagine, tells interesting tales about the stars (yet another reason to watch her show).

Saroj Khan recounted how Aishwarya Rai, while shooting for the Filmfare Best Choreography Award winning song ‘Barso re megha‘ from Guru (2007), had met with an accident. While filming a scene, Ash was supposed to cycle her way through a bridge, during heavy rains and wind storms, and a gushing stream beneath. Her skirt got entangled in the rear wheel, and she fortunately fell on the bridge, otherwise she could just have been washed away! Aishwarya had suffered bruises on her hand, and Saroj Khan recounted how she gave a perfect shot after getting first-aid, while also mentioning that, had there been any other actress, she would have announced pack-up, but not Ash!

The scene where Aishwarya is seen diving into the pond, was completed only when Saroj Khan made her swim the entire length of the pond. Saroj Khan also praised her for dancing atop a large rock, amidst the thunderstorm. She told that Mani Ratnam got apprehensive about shooting that particular scene as the height was way too much risky, made far more dangerous with the blowing wind and heavy rain. But when Aishwarya learnt that her director was forcibly keeping himself from a beautiful sequence, she stubbornly climbed atop with the help of a crane and gave a beautiful shot yet again, while the whole crew was biting nails with tension, almost waiting for her to slip and fall off! Aishwarya Rai has been Saroj Khan’s favourite dancer, since working with her in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999).

Shame on Amrita Rao, shame on Arshad Warsi!

Tadka question - At the 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards. two of our actors refused to do something - What and why?

Year 1999 - Saroj Khan aka “Materji”is handed the Filmfare Best Choreographer Award by MF Hussain and Naghma (song ‘Nimbooda’, movie - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam)

Year 2002 - Rakesh Ranjan is handed the Filmfare Best Sound Recordist Award by Shyam Benegal and Sharmila Tagore (movie - Aks)

Year 2008 - Sujata Sharma Virk is given the Filmfare Best Costume Designer Award by Abbas-Mustaan (movie - Gandhi, My Father).

And here’s the sad part. At this year’s 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards, two of our stars simply refused to go on stage to hand over the technical awards. Why? Because they thought that this was beneath them!

Amrita Rao and Arshad Warsi, were requested by the Filmfare team to go on-stage and deliver the Technical Awards, which are also the first set of awards handed out each year, in the oldest and the most sought-after awards night of the Indian Film Industry. But when Amrita Rao was asked to do the honours, she refysed saying, “Send me up for something better na! Please!”.

Stars ka Tadka - Nitin Chandrakant Desai

Tadka trivia

Indian Film Industry is full of movies whose sets have caught on with not just Indian, but global audiences. Nitin Chandrakant Desai is one of the most popular art directors of Indian Film Industry today. Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Lagaan are some of his most popular works, barring the first of which got him a National Award each. He has four National Awards and four Fiilmfare Awards as well, and he continues to excell in taking the audiences to a visual tour of altogether different worlds. In fact, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was so impressed with his work on the sets of his movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that after finishing the whole movie, he didn’t let the sets to be destroyed, and rather chose to stay there for a complete month itself! Needless to say, Nitin’s work on Bhansali’s Devdas and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan haunts the audiences till date and makes them wish, if only they could be there too…

Dharm and Parzania disrespected at Filmfare Awards

Tadka question - For long, parallel cinema wasn’t featured in mainstream award shows like the reputed Filmfare Awards, but why were they nominated this year, only to draw a blank?

‘English, dubbed and foriegn movies are not to be nominated for any of the awards.’ Or so used to read one of the many lines of the Filmfare Awards advertisements, asking the general public to nominate their previous year’s favourite performances. And any viewer, not just a fan of Filmfare, could have easily guessed that hard hitting movies like Dharm and Parzania would not be nominated in any of the categories.

But this year, all that changed. Gems of 2007, from Indian Cinema, Dharm and Parzania were not only nominated in at least two categories, at the 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards, but drew a blank when it came to collect the most-sought after award, the black statuette at the ceremony. This is perhaps the first time that Filmfare has nominated two off-beat multiplex movies in the popular awards categories, and also gone ahead to Read more
