Racist Oscars 2008 - The winners

Tadka question - What happens when an Indian film-maker gets top nominations in the Oscar Awards? Read on, to find the answer, including the one to the title of this article.

Close on the heels of the Filmfare Awards taking place on the 23rd of this month, their American counterpart the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars came to a grand finale today. There was no sign of Mira Nair’s The Namesake in any of the nominations, asserting the fact that Oscars turn colour blind when it comes to movies from directors of primarily non-English speaking nations. More over, Indian film maker Shekhar Kapoor’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, won only one award, that too in the most forgettable categories: Best Costume Design. This comes years after Shekhar Kapoor was meted out the same treatment, when his first part of the Elizabeth series, won just one, and yet another forgettable Oscar award, in the category Best Make-up, Jenny Shircore, (1998). 10 years and nothing changed! On the other hand, India had already destroyed it’s chances of getting the award in The Best Foreign Language Film category, by sending Eklavya: The Royal Gaurd as it’s official entry, leaving aside gems like Taare Zameen Par, Chak De! India and even Dharm.

Meanwhile, here’s a list of the winners at this year’s Oscars, the 80th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS -

Yesterday we told you about how Hrithik Roshan’s first nomination at the Filmfare Awards was a double whammy. And his favourite co-star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also did something similar, but not with the same results.

Aishwarya Rai has won three Filmfare Awards till now:
Best Actress - Jeans, Tamil, 1998 (Filmfare Best Actress Award South)
Best Actress - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999
Best Actress - Devdas, 2002

In 2000, she was nominated in the same category for both Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), and Subhash Ghai’s Taal (1999), the two movies which gave her career a great leap and stamped her arrival. Aishwarya arrived at the 45th Filmfare Awards- 2000, sporting large goggles and a plaster in left hand, which left tongues wagging and claiming that she was beaten by ex-lover Salman Khan, a reason she was hiding her blackened eyes, and also that she was pushed by him down the stairs, a reason for her plaster. Her only reply was - “I am a former Miss World. Do people expect me to bear all this?”. After being presented the award by Sridevi, she posed for photographers, wearing a million dollar smile, along with a vindicated Sanjay Dutt, who won the Best Actor award for Vaastav.

Later, in the year 2001, she was nominated in the Best Actor In A Lead Role Female category, for her work as a rape victim in Satish Kaushik’s Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, (2000) and in the Best Supporting Actor Female category for her work as a ghost lover of Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein (2000). This year she lost to Kareena Kapoor (Jab We Met), pitted against her, for her strong-willed-wife role in Mani Ratnam’s Guru.

Hrithik Roshan has made Filmfare history like no other industrywalla! When he made his debut in 2000 with dad Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho naa…Pyaar Hai, he went on to win not one, but two awards at the 46th Annual Filmfare Awards - 2001, in the categories Best Newcomer (Male) as well as winning the popular award of Best Actor, pipping Shah Rukh Khan nominated for Mohabbatein, Anil Kapoor for Pukar, Sanjay Dutt for Mission Kashmir (he starred in this one too), and himself as well, in his second nomination, for Fiza.

After this he made a few forgettable films. Even though he gave them his 200%, but that didn’t work as well at the BO and he was written off as a one film wonder. He resurfaced as the most powerful performer in 2003, when his Koi…Mil Gaya sent the nation and especially it’s kids in a tizzy. At the 49th Filmfare Awards-2004, he once again won two awards, again for the same role, this time being Best Actor in the popular category and Critic’s Choice Best Actor! This time he beat Shah Rukh Khan again, nominated for Kal Ho Naa Ho, Ajay Devgan for GangaJal, Amitabh Bachchan for Baghban and Salman Khan for Tere Naam. And so he not just proved that he was the best, but made history as well.

Last year, at the 52nd Filmfare Awards-2007, he won the Best Actor In A Leading Role (Male) award, for his superb act in Dhoom:2 - Back In Action! And with Jodhaa Akbar already having made a mark, he will give others a tough competition next year too!

At the annual Filmfare function in 1985, the chief reporter of Filmfare, V S Gopalakrishnan, was briefed by The Times Of India heads, that the show was supposed to promote Indian culture and should have a performance from a young industrywallah, who would set everybody’s feet tapping.

This is when Govind Ahuja came through, and used to learn all the right breakdance moves for sixteen hours at a stretch, that too by travelling every day from Virar. And when V S was asked with all the doubt by his team, about who this Govinda was, his only answer was, “He dances like a dream”. And thus started the journey of a young lad, whom we know by the name of Govinda today!

Amrita Arora to give JLo a run for her money!

The sultry siren has just completed shooting a sizzling number for Ravi Chopra’s next movie and has been so happy with the output that she has gone on to claim that she is gonna give Jennifer Lopez a run for her money. And considering the fact that Amrita Arora’s abs are a sought-after thing in Tinselville, the statement comes across as not too shocking.

In the year 1995, a new award category was introduced for the first, as well as the last time itself. The category was Best Costume Designer, and the only ever such Filmfare award was given to Manish Malhotra, for his work on Urmila Matondkar’s clothes in the movie Rangeela. Though many costume designers like Neeta Lulla, and the duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla have become known names in the Indian Film Industry, this award was never ever given to anyone else. Manish Malhotra is the only designer in thw world, who can claim to have won an award which, probably, no one will ever get again. Beat that!
