This year, the year of the 53rd Filmfare Awards holds a special significance in the number itself! For it was in the year 1953 itself that the first ever Filmfare Awards were introduced. Over 20,000 readers of the Filmfare magazine from all over the country, had voted to decide the winners. The function was held on 21st March, 1954, with just five categories, with names and winners as follows:
Best Film – Do Bigha Zameen
Best Actor – Dilip Kumar (Daag)
Best Actress – Meena Kumari (Baiju Bawra)
Best Director – Bimal Roy (Do Bigha Zameen)
Best Music Director – Naushad (Baiju Bawra)
