Our last and final take on the nominations in the Filmfare Awards 2008, is on the category of Best Playback Singer (Female).
She set hearts afire a few yaers back when she playbacked for Aishwarya Rai: ‘Kajrare Kajrare‘ from Bunty Aur Babli. Alisha Chinai won a Filmfare for that song, which was the number one chartbuster of South African radio stations, for more than twenty weeks. She is back this time, as our first nominee for singing ‘It’s rocking‘ from the movie Kya Love Story Hai! and catapulting Kareena Kapoor to the hearts and minds of viewers and listeners alike.
Our next contender, ever since discovered by Sanjay Leela Bhansali as the voice of Paro in his movie Devdas, has been a permanent fix in award shows ever since. Shreya Ghoshal has two nominations: for bringing the cheerfulness of monsoons right in the hearts and beats of each and every Indian listener, with ‘Barso re megha‘ from the movie Guru, and for expressing the excitations of newfound love in Jab We Met’s ‘Ye ishq haaye‘.
What comes as big surprise is that none of the veteran singers of yesteryears has made it to the nominations this time around. Alka Yagnik, Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar and all their counterparts are missing from the action this time.
And guess who has clinched the last two spots in the race this time? It’s Sunidhi Chauhan. Who else? This year she has been nominated for two songs. First, for sending everyone with two left feet onto the dance floor, with ‘Sajna di vaari‘ from the movie Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. And secondly for singing Madhuri Dixit’s comeback song, ‘Aaja nachle‘ from Aaja Nachle.
But this is one category where the winner is anyone’s guess. With songs that continue to rock the nation, it will be a tough choice for the jury and the voters to decide the winner in this category. How we wish everyone could go back with a statuette! But that’s the power of Filmfare Awards: each nominee is a winner in itself. Here’s to a the most awaited night of the year. Cheers!
