And now we bring to you our take on the nominations in the Best Lyrics category of Filmfare Awards.

The first nominee is Gulzar, nominated for ‘Tere bina‘ from the movie Guru. Considering the fact that he won the award for ‘Beedi jalaile‘ from Omkara, last year, it’s no surprise that the man who says that ‘I write crap these days’, comes up with some great lines such as the following:
‘tere bina chand ka sona khota re
(without you, the moon’s shine itself seems lacklustre)
peeli peeli dhool udaa de, jhoota re
(and you kick some more dust trying to woo me, you liar)
tere bina sona peetal
(without you gold seems nothing more than copper)
tere sang keekar pipal
(and with you, a tree full of thorns seems to be full of green)

Next in line is Gulzar’s biggest rival, though as friendly as they are old, Javed Akhtar. Javed saab has been nominated forMain agar kahoon‘ from Om Shanti Om. Some excerpts from the song which is a every lover’s favourite these days:
‘kisi zubaan mein bhi, wo lafz hi naheen
(no language has the perfect words…)
ki jinme tum ho kya, tumhe bata sakoon
(to help me explain the beauty in you)
‘tum hue, meherbaan
(it was courtesy you…)
to hai ye, dastaan
(that our love story bloomed…)
ab tumhara mera ek hai kaarvaan,
(now we are destined towards the same fate…)
tum jahaan, main wahaan
(and where-ever you’ll be, i’ll be there with you)

Guess who is giving the two stalwarts mentioned above, stiffer competition than they could have imagined? It’s Prasoon Joshi, nominated for ‘Maa‘ from Taare Zameen Par. No son for sure could have got over the goosebumps, that the lines in this song give. The song touches you to the core, and brings out the great Indian mother figure better than ever before. Kudos to Prasoon Joshi. Perhaps the most touching lines:
‘main kabhi, batlaata nahi
(even though i might not tell you…)
par andhere se darta hun main maa,
(but i am afraid of the dark, maa)
main kabhi, dikhlata nahi
(even though i might never show it…)
teri parwaah karta hun main maa
(but i do care for you, maa)
tujhe sab hai pata, hai na maa
(you know everything, don’t you maa?…)
One song which neither the audiences, nor the radio stations worldwide seem to be getting enough of is ‘Jab se tere naina‘ from Saawariya. Leave aside Ranbir Kapoor’s nangu-pangu appearnace in the song, Sameer’s lyrics made the song, the music and the actor himself a star. The crazyness shown in Ranbir’s act went in tandem with the spirit of the lyrics, and this is one song which every guy will probably want to sing to his sweetheart:
‘jabse hui hai tujhse shararat
(ever since i flirted with you…)
tabse gaya hai chain-o-karaar
(there is restlessness in my mind and heart…)
jabse tera, aanchal dhalaa
(ever since that veil blew away, revealing your face beaneath…)
tabse koi, jaadu chala
(some deep magic worked, and blew me away…)
jabse tujhe paya, ye jiya dhak dhak bhaage re
(ever since i got you, this heart races non-stop, my love)

Vishal Dadlani has been nominated for ‘Ankhon Mein Teri’ from Om Shanti Om. Surely, if there is one song that Deepika Padukone can claim as her trademark, it’s this one, what with it’s imprinted image of a sultry Deepika stepping out of the car, waving her hand so gracefully, and making her way into the Indian hearts forever with this song. Some lines:
‘aayi aisi raat hai jo, bohat khushnaseeb hai
(a fortunate night, has come upon us…)
chahe jisse door se duniya, wo mere kareeb hai
(the cynosure of all eyes, stands next to me)
‘kitna kuch kehna hai phir bhi hai dil mein sawaal kaheen
(though there’s a lot to say, a question comes up somewhere…)
sapno mein jo roz kaha hai wo phir se kahun ya nahi
(whether i should go ahead and say to her, all that i did in my dreams)

We’ll be back with more! Till then, immerse yourself in these songs :)
