Filmfare Awards trivia

Tadka trivia

If there are casting coups which directors try for all the time, then there are certain things which can happen only at Filmfare Awards.

The year was 1999, and at the 44tn Annual Filmfare Awards - 1999, Kajol was the eye of the storm. She had just delivered her nth hit in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and along with Shah Rukh Khan winning the Best Actor award for KKHH, she too was declared the Best Actress. Wearing a light brown ensemble, she was shimmering with her soon to be bridal status, as she was to marry Ajay Devgan a few days later. And it was a moment which everyone saw with bated breath, as Shah Rukh Khan hugged Kajol, virtually for the last time, as speculation of the SRK-Devgan feud was at an all time high. Needless to say, the picture was at the front page of each national daily, the following morning.

But if there are sights which enthrall you for years to come, then there are other things which can make it not so rocking. Last year, when the Filmfare Awards guest list was trimmed heavily pertaining to the number of seats in Yash Raj Studios, sisters Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor were forced to sit behind, guess who… Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, as these were the only two seats that were vacant by the time the Kapoor sisters came to find some. Karisma was once the fiance of Abhishek, and the relations went sour after the break off during engagement, with Kareena Kapoor rumoured to have been badmouthing Jaya Bachchan to one and all, and blaming her for her sister’s broken alliance. Abhishek and Aishwarya married a few days later!

Sanjay Dutt jumped back into the big league with Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai M.B.B.S, and he certainly couldn’t have been disappointed by the Filmfare jury. But it was the same year that Hrithik Roshan had given a tight slap on his critics’ views, with his performance in Rakesh Roshan’s Koi…Mil Gaya. Hrithik bagged two Filmfares that night, and Sanjay Dutt was given the Best Actor In A Comic Role award, while Arshad ‘Circuit’ Warsi was given the Best Supporting Actor award.

But Sanju baba made himself heard loud and cleared and expressed the fact that he was miffed for having been nominated in the comic role category, and not the leading role one. He went on to say that he didn’t feel that he had done anything comical in the movie. But both Arshad Warsi and Sanjay Dutt were happy to get the elusive black lady in their hands after a long wait. After all in each acceptance speech, there’s a true cliche`: “Filmfare is special!”

Ever since they first came together four years back at the 49th Annual Filmfare Awards, our hosts for the evening Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan have left the audiences in splits. They first came together after having starred in Nikhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho, for which they were nominated at that year’s Filmfare Awards. They played Kanta-ben Jokes and too on every big blockbuster of that year, be it Munnabhai M.B.B.S, Koi… Mil Gaya and even their own movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. What’s more? They wore shirts which had the following written across them: ‘We love Kantaben’!

They returned at the following Annual nights of the Filmfare Awards, but last year when Saif Ali Khan took to the hospital due to his minor heart attack, thanks to his excessive smoking, SRK was left alone.

They returned at this year’s show, and much to the delight of all those who have watched them play party-poopers for the last couple of years! One of the highlights of them playing the (not-so)-perfect hosts, was handing out the Indian version of Razzies, the Na-Real award. And one of the recipients was Vidya Balan, for wearing the outrageous attire in Heyy Babyy! She even returned Shah Rukh’s take at her in quite an interesting way, but we aren’t telling you how. For that you have got to watch the show.

The Filmfare Awards changed the whole format of the annual show last year. Till 2006, Filmfare Awards, being the most awaited event of the year in the Indian Film Industry, were held at the MMRDA Grounds, in Goregaon, Mumbai. There used to be a large audience from the general public as well and the show would be telecast live on television sets across the world. Before Sony Entertainment Television bought the exclusive telecast rights, Filmfare Awards were continuosly telecast on the National Channel, better known as Door-Darshan, or DD-1. And there used to be repeat telecasts as well.

But last year, in response to the losing credibility of the movie awards shows, Filmfare made sure that it wouldn’t be counted in as yet another award show, which unfortunately are shown these days, each month, as if soap operas.

Starting 2007, Filmfare Awards shifted base to the sprankling new Yash Raj Studios, where a limited audience was invited strictly by invitation, and this gave the Filmfare team nightmares as it became impossible to cut down the huge guest list to the selected ones. Moreover, the show was recorded, but not telecast live on television, only to be shown a few days after the actual event took place. And no, this time they didn’t give the audience a second chance: there was no repeat telecast, a decision likely to be implemented here on. So forget everything and make sure that you are free this Sunday night!

Racist Oscars 2008 - The winners

Tadka question - What happens when an Indian film-maker gets top nominations in the Oscar Awards? Read on, to find the answer, including the one to the title of this article.

Close on the heels of the Filmfare Awards taking place on the 23rd of this month, their American counterpart the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars came to a grand finale today. There was no sign of Mira Nair’s The Namesake in any of the nominations, asserting the fact that Oscars turn colour blind when it comes to movies from directors of primarily non-English speaking nations. More over, Indian film maker Shekhar Kapoor’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, won only one award, that too in the most forgettable categories: Best Costume Design. This comes years after Shekhar Kapoor was meted out the same treatment, when his first part of the Elizabeth series, won just one, and yet another forgettable Oscar award, in the category Best Make-up, Jenny Shircore, (1998). 10 years and nothing changed! On the other hand, India had already destroyed it’s chances of getting the award in The Best Foreign Language Film category, by sending Eklavya: The Royal Gaurd as it’s official entry, leaving aside gems like Taare Zameen Par, Chak De! India and even Dharm.

Meanwhile, here’s a list of the winners at this year’s Oscars, the 80th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS -

Yesterday we told you about how Hrithik Roshan’s first nomination at the Filmfare Awards was a double whammy. And his favourite co-star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also did something similar, but not with the same results.

Aishwarya Rai has won three Filmfare Awards till now:
Best Actress - Jeans, Tamil, 1998 (Filmfare Best Actress Award South)
Best Actress - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999
Best Actress - Devdas, 2002

In 2000, she was nominated in the same category for both Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), and Subhash Ghai’s Taal (1999), the two movies which gave her career a great leap and stamped her arrival. Aishwarya arrived at the 45th Filmfare Awards- 2000, sporting large goggles and a plaster in left hand, which left tongues wagging and claiming that she was beaten by ex-lover Salman Khan, a reason she was hiding her blackened eyes, and also that she was pushed by him down the stairs, a reason for her plaster. Her only reply was - “I am a former Miss World. Do people expect me to bear all this?”. After being presented the award by Sridevi, she posed for photographers, wearing a million dollar smile, along with a vindicated Sanjay Dutt, who won the Best Actor award for Vaastav.

Later, in the year 2001, she was nominated in the Best Actor In A Lead Role Female category, for her work as a rape victim in Satish Kaushik’s Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, (2000) and in the Best Supporting Actor Female category for her work as a ghost lover of Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein (2000). This year she lost to Kareena Kapoor (Jab We Met), pitted against her, for her strong-willed-wife role in Mani Ratnam’s Guru.
