The movie Halla Bol has been directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, who has in the past given us some fine pieces of cinema, some of which are Damini, Khakee, Pukar, Lajja, to name a few. His movies have been associated with causes and are actually different from the general masala fare that is meted out to the audiences, Friday after Friday.
This time he comes together with Vidya Balan, Ajay Devgan and Pankaj Kapoor to deliver a movie with yet another different storyline than the run-of-the-mill stuff. Halla Bol is the story of Ajay Devgan, who plays the role of Ashfaque, a small town chap who hopes to become a big movie star. In an effort to realize his dreams, he joins a street theatre group, running under the aeges of Pankaj Kapoor, who plays the role of Sidhu, a reformed dacoit, who uses his group to convey relevant social messages to the public.
Soon Ajay Devgan is catapulted into the world of movies, where he gets a new name: Sameer Khan. And Sameer Khan, the actor, goes on to become Sameer Khan, the star, what with the roles getting better by the day and the movies getting bigger as well.
But behind the glitz and glamour of his new life, the real Ashfaque tends to be lost in the glare of flashlights, while his characters start taking over his world, as if they got through a porous soul. Over a course of time, his whole life starts reeking of corruption and he is alienated from all his near and dear ones, even his wife Sneha (Vidya Balan), drifting away from him.
And soon after that, at a party, Ajay’s life is rocked by an incident which shocks everyone no end. And then begins the real struggle of good and bad, which the movie aims to portray. Since Rajkumar Santoshi is at the helm of all affairs here, one can expect Halla Bol to be bold and beautiful at the same time. Apart from the lead stars, some Bollywood stars play themselves in the movie, including Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Ruby Bhatia.
2007 saw Vidya Balan deliver a turkey in Eklavya: The Royal Gaurd, and two smash hits in Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiya, while her appearance in ‘deewangi deewangi‘ from OSO affirmed her prospective queen bee status of Bollywood. But Ajay Devgan suffered a professional setback with both his films Cash and RGV Ki Aag garnering no cash at the Box Office. But it was Pankaj Kapoor who soared above all, what with his diverse and strong portrayal in two starkly different gems, Dharm and The Blue Umbrella, once again displaying the powerhouse talent of this veteran actor. And with a director like Rajkumar Santoshi, we hope that Halla Bol turns out to be the Guru of 2008. Amen!
