One song. Just one song. ‘Deewangi deewangi‘ is that one song which will remain in the memory of the Indian cine-goer long after the last prints of the blockbuster Om Shanti Om have been withdrawn from the cinemas across the globe. And long after the movie would have sweeped its fair share of awards, will people still like to watch it over and over again. Because you just can’t get enough of it. Hats off to Farah Khan, the choreographer turned director. First she goes ahead and makes a movie based on reincarnation (punarh-janam), with a parallel take at moviedom in the great Bollywood, then she takes a newcomer opposite King Khan aka Shah Rukh Khan, and then, when other directors are busy managing the tantrums of virtual nobodies on the sets of their movies, she not only manages to get thirty one stars for a single item number of her movie, she also makes them dance to her tunes.
The song is a tribute to the great Indian Film Industry, which has been filmed over six days of complete masti on the sets. There was chaos all around as the stars came together in such a manner for the first time. Here is a look at some of the stars who are featured in this ‘baap’ of all item songs:
Kajol - the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol jodi gave five movies, all of them blockbusters. Kajol started her career with SRK in Baazigar, went on to deliver superhits Karan-Arjun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (the epitome of all romances), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and then Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The audiences love this jodi till date and hope every day that some or the other news would come of some movie, where these two would be seen opposite each other once again. If Kajol wouldn’t have been seen in this song, it would not have been the same.
Tabu - Her ‘The Namesake’ is garnering rave reviews, with some expecting it to be the one which will fetch India that elusive Oscar. Tabu’s association with Shah Rukh goes back to the guest appearance of the two stars in Saathiya, the Vivek Oberoi-Rani Mukerjee hit. Tabu, the thinking actress who can be easily called the male Aamir Khan, can be seen hovering a few inches above King Khan in this song, thanks to her great height, which kept her away from most of conventional and cliche Hindi movie roles, as her lead stars were shorter than her, a point which is a disadvantage if you have to run around trees. With Cheeni Kum, Tabu was back and no-one could have done that role, but herself. We hope to see more of her. Watch her in ‘deewangi deewangi’ kissing a surprised Shah Rukh on his cheeks!
Dharmendra and Bobby Deol - Another of Farah’s dream stars that she wanted to choreograph was Dharamji. While Dharmendra arrived once again with Johnny Gaddaar and Apne, Bobby has only one hit, Apne, in recent times to bank on. Farah Khan recounted how she let Dharamji do whatever he wanted to, because of his image of a non-dancer from his ‘jatt yamla’ days. Bobby though is a better one when it comes to choreographed numbers. Bobby makes an appearance with Preity Zinta, with whom he gave one of his first hits, Soldier. And you are bound to smile when you see Dharam Paaji do that yamla pagla jatt’ act once again.
Preity Zinta - When Bharat Shah was arrested during the filming of Devdas, for his alleged links with the underworld, she was the only one who didn’t turn hostile despite several threats from the underworld, only to be hailed as the ‘only man’ in the industry. She dared to play an unwed mother in her first signed movie Kya Kehna, much to everyone’s surprise. Preity swore on the sets of Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se (her debut venture) that she would never work with Shah Rukh Khan again, as the star’s unlimited energy would continously irritate her, only to go ahead and deliver superhits like Kal Ho Na Ho and Veer Zaara with the Badshah of Bollywood. And once again, her dimples add sparkle to this song.
Ritesh Deshmukh - The newbie who came and slowly started to conquer. His ‘gay’mes in recent roles he has portrayed have left the audiences in splits and with hits like Apna Sapna Money Money and Heyy Babyy in his kitty; he has surely yet slowly climbed ahead of other newcomers. Tough politician dad might still be battling it out in the political alleys, but Ritesh has managed to stay clear of any major controversies, and in recent times has emerged as a part of King Khan’s close freinds’ circle.
Zayed Khan - The whole world knows about the Ram-Lakshman aka Lucky bonding, which director Farah Khan brought forth in her maiden directorial venture Main Hoon Na. Here again, the married-but-not-looking-a-bit-like-it Khan matches his trademark MHN style, in step with his Ram bhaiya. Zayed ko to iss song mein hona hi tha!
Malaika Arora Khan and Amrita Arora - Malaika is what you translate to ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ after you catch a glimpse of this glamorous mum, wife, model,VJ,actor, judge and style icon. Farah Khan had made Shah Rukh and Malaika dance atop a moving train eight years back in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se, in an A.R. Rahman song which is a rage till date, and left some of the Hollywood technicians agape when they saw what a feat had been acheived without any safety harnesses and stuff! Malaika scorched the screen again with SRK in an item number of Kaal! This item number definitely demanded her, in her teeny weeny dress. And younger sister Amrita Arora is in tow, with her sexy body swaying to the beats of this song. Amrita put in in her own words that it was an honour to be in a song like this, capturing the views of the entire unit om the sets!
Urmila Matondkar - She labelled a fresh-from-the-hinterland Shah Rukh as a ‘bichhoo’ (scorpion) when she petrified the poor little village boy in Chamatkaar. And now the oomph queen is seen here flaunting her trademark histrionics, looking sexy in her green attire, making the song all the more special for those who have been waiting since 1991, when she was last seen with King Khan in Chamatkaar itself.
Jeetendra and Tushhar Kapoor - Jeetuji, as Farah fondly calls him, was one of the brightest stars in tinselville during the 70s. And no one can forget the ‘jumping jack’ with his idiosyncratic style of donning white apparel all the way to the shoes itself. He had to be in a song then, and here he is, shaking a leg seemingly better than his own son, Tushhar, who himself can be seen in the video. But it isn’t as much as sonny dear as much it is about dad Jeetendra. He truly made the song special and was seen gushing about it later. Farah’s dream of choreographing him came true, finally!
Govinda - ‘That’s the way, ahaa ahaa! I like it, ahaa ahaa!’ He might be a ‘golu’ star today, but after coming back into notice with Partner, Govinda proved again that he was one fun guy to be seen, and even more so when seen dancing. So here you have, the ‘No.1′ star from the 90s who just had to be in a movie to save the producer from publicity expenses once. And with his eyes widened with surprise, you might love him more than Shah Rukh in the song. (Shah Rukh had made a special appearance in Govinda’s movie Achanak, in 1998, though the movie was a debacle.)
More coming soon…
